Emerald F1 is well adapted to most ecological zones. In Kenya, the variety has shown good results in ALL tomato-growing areas like Kirinyaga, Kajiado, Laikipia, Homabay, Narok among others.
Emerald is an early maturing variety with most of the growers enjoying their first harvest within the first 60 to 70 days from transplant. The variety is a high yielder with well-distributed fruit clusters averaging 7 to 10 fruits each.
Emerald F1 has very firm fruits with very good shelf life. Due to this aspect, sellers have fallen in love with the variety because it arrives into and stays in the market fresh.
In terms of disease resistance and tolerance, Emerald F1 is highly tolerant to Bacterial Wilt (BW) commonly known as ‘Muthingithu’ in some parts of Kenya. Emerald F1 also has good tolerance to Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl – TYLCV (commonly referred to as Gathuri, Ngumi). It is good to note that other than having good tolerance to BW and TYLCV Emerald F1 has good resistance to Fusarium wilt, Verticillium Wilt and Nematodes.
Due to its good tolerance to Bacterial Wilt, Emerald F1 has been the variety of choice for tomato growers in Kirinyaga, Homabay and parts of Western Kenya, which are areas known to have high infestations of the disease.
